Every believer needs the counsel of God on a regular basis.

Every Christian, not just ordained ministers, are called on to give and receive the counsel of God on a regular basis.

Colossians 2:3 says that most of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.

God's perspective of counseling is to lead to discipleship.  He is not merely aiming at removing or meeting a need, but in using that need in moving that person into the path of discipleship (salvation) or advancing them along the path of discipleship (Christian maturity). 

Sanctification is only past (or positional sanctification) and present (progressive sanctification). 

Primarily, in couseling, one is dealing with present or progressive sanctification.

The Bible, the truth of the Word of God, is the ultimate authority when counseling people.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.

Praying is one of the hardest things man has to do.

It is acceptable to simply pray when receiving or giving counsel if you do not know the answer to a situation, problem or need, thereby relying on the counsel of God to give the answers. 

Colossians 3:16 reads, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another . . ." meaning to counsel one another, to warn, or confront people with the truth of God.

Only ordained ministers, pastors or health-care professionals are anointed by God to counsel. 

The best way to become equipped for the ministry of counseling is to get a degree in psychology or psychiatry.

When you don't have a specific solution to a seemingly impossible situation, you should point the counselee to the love, faithfulness and greatness of God, building their faith that God loves them and will see them through their problems as they look unto Him as the Father God and not you as the counselor.

Most people think that their personal troubles are unique and impossible, when in reality they are common to man and simple to God. 

Some situations that people encounter are tests to increase and refine their faith.

There is a more profound and effective way to counsel people than just dealing with the problem at hand and that is to disciple people in the foundational truths that permeates every issue a person is facing.

Behavior alone, and therefore behavior modification, is not man's central problem or need. 

As long as a person remains "in Adam" he has hope to change his circumstances.

God wants us to know the heavenly facts presented in Romans 6 that we can have newness of life in Christ and share those facts with others who come to us for counseling.

Romans 7 reveals an ongoing problem that we must deal with -- our flesh.

We must learn ourselves and teach/counsel others how to walk and live not according to the flesh, which means by our own best efforts, but how to walk and live according to the Spirit,  which means to live by biblical truths through faith in Christ and His grace to do so.

The Law of the Spirit as described in Romans 8:1-4 is what sets a person free from bondages.

To counsel someone so as to disciple them through the foundational truths of Romans 5-9 will result in:  as many as are led by the spirit are the children of God.

So many counseling situations concern confusion in the lives of believers as to who they are in Christ.

The renewing of the mind may meet general needs but not specific needs.

In many counseling issues, the person who is seeking counsel is dealing with spiritual warfare.

Romans 8:37 says that IN all these things (meaning while we are in the battle, not just after the battle is over) we are more than conquerors through Christ.

A proper personal walk with God is a primary issue if you want to be used of God to counsel God's way.
